FOV - Do we need it ?

Post by [ZG] BubblesDevere »

Hey everyone,

FOV has been discussed before - IB was the first to suggest it, so I would like to bring the topic back on the table,

Please comment below

If this were something we would decide to go for it would work in a similar way than VOLUME and could even appear on RANKS

Apologies if this is the wrong thread, I can't see a thread for general suggestions?

Anyway, I have said so before, but I would really like to see a way to adjust our in game FOV added to both servers.

It's marked as a cheat in hl2dm by valve because if allowed to be set at any value people can use very low FOV to zoom with any gun, so range should be limited (though you can suit zoom with any gun in hl2dm anyway :roll: )

Most modern FPS games, far more competition focussed than hl2dm, allow you to set FOV between 75-130, Quake live, Modern Warfare, CSS:Go all do, so it's obviously no cheat.

Default in hl2dm is 85 I think which is very low imo. I Iike to play at 105 in other games. It makes everything slightly smaller and further away looking, but adds a bit more "peripheral vision" to the edges of screen (like fish eye), it's far more comfortable to play at higher FOV (90+) when sitting close to a monitor (especially so now I have a 27" monitor).
75-85 is FOV used in most console games where you sit far back from the TV.

hi, it would be interesting to test. Since it so happened that there was an opportunity to get to know this effect better, why not give it a try?

ok Tash

it is ready for test:

Type in chat:
TEST1 -----> 90 (standard)
TEST2 -----> 95
TEST3 -----> 100
TEST4 -----> 105

Anything above that starts to look weird and hacky and the hands are hollow
Reply below, do we like 4 settings ? we could add more ?

The design would be like VOL so ...

[ 90 92 94 96 98 100 102 104 106 ]
or
[ 90 95 100 105 ]
or
[ 90 93 96 99 102 105 ]
or
[ ? ]

I have a newish 27inch monitor and I think adding a little FOV is better , I did some tests just now and I think 95 would be nice to have as option.

"FOV - Do we need it ?"
yes, playing with high fov is essential in FPS games, you can see more things and spot enemies more easier, and the weapon cover less the screen

It would be convenient if you could change the FOV yourself. How is it available on other servers. For example, using the command: !fov and the desired value

Yes my doods!
ZG needs a fov modifier feature. Not only does it do all of the above, but it also probably helps you to tune your gameplay. Personally, being able to change fov to desired value (90-110) helped me see the game in differently. Different perspective. Instant value. A sort of semi-dimension-like-depthness added. Definately helped me understand something. Also movements feel more immersive and cool. - I would say it is only a positive thing to have a fov modifier feature. That's about the only thing thats missing from this dope server :-)

"Test5"

Usually on servers with fov modifiers don't usually show the player's viewmodel at the same scale corresponding with the fov. - I believe this smaller/slimmer viewmodel that you get with playing with high fov is what is considered the cheat aspect of it. In many games.
I would suggest a range between 90-110 and the normal sized viewmodel for any fov. That would neglect any edges of players viewmodel and also no clipping through walls. Since any fov value over 110 (at least on a 1920x1080 resolution) you would be able to see through walls if you press up against a wall and use your pheriphial vision. My impression is that 90-110 is considered the allowed range for whats left of the "competitive community". *I have a tiny penis*

I am still working on the feature - although completed for most part
the return to your chosen fov after zoom is not working
for the moment please do not spam fovXXX in the chat and let it be please
the feature will be fully functional in a couple of days

After which i will report and explain how to and what in the feature improvement section

Thanks
