How to encourage player to talk?
This is my idea to create a bit of code for this.... let me know your thoughts and suggestions please!
if players active > 3
if player not in away mode
if player not in spec
if postal off
(anything else?)
notalk []
clear no talk at map end
if player says something, clear no talk for that player
twice per map, check no talk for each player
if no talk:
Show some text to them in the chat - something about saysounds?
Show them something on MOTD? - maybe saysounds list? or something special that we make for that?
We could also do a reward thing, if these notalk players say something longer than 20 letters, they get something for free? That's harder to do though because it could be abused...

Re: How to encourage player to talk?
Another issue is that some players are not English speakers. It would be nice if we could display some messages for the non English speakers in their own language. Maybe it is possible to detect what country a player connect from, and then display some message in their language. Let`s say they connect from Poland, we have members that are native speakers, and I`m sure they would help, or in Russian for that matter. Maybe it is even possible to enable saysounds in Polish or Russian. My point is just that it is not encouraging to chat in English, when you don`t speak English. I`m sure you have an overview of which countries players connect from the most Bubbles.
second point is that messages are easily overlooked. At least that`s the case with me, sometimes I overlook messages by accident, and of course the other one sending the message feels ignored and overlooked. Don`t know what to do about that without making the chat annoying, bigger text, tick sound....idk
And simply have a statement in the opening screen that we encourage communication.

I agree with Claus. Sometimes I can also miss messages due to the fact that all events and announces are displayed in the chat, and as a non-native speaker I need more time to read, which is not there.

Re: How to encourage player to talk?
I like the idea of telling someone , something EXTRA to a new player
I could calculate that with say if the player has under 3000 points !
That means for the few first times they would join
Yes is is possible to detect the language of players and to have a separate file with all the languages
And if you noticed, the welcome message is in your langauge, that is all i managed to do up to now because translating ALL the stuff of the server whilst keeping all the colour coding etc etc etc
is a MASSIVE task - you can almost compare it to re writing 6 new servers..... There is A LOT of code for one pesrson.
If one of you is interested , it could be a collaborative project.

let's take for example the KBH server, there are mostly Russian-speaking players, the chat is voiced by Russian, and nevertheless no one uses it, it seems to me that the problem is not in the language, problem is wanting to communicate . "Hi" as a greeting is understandable to everyone.

Haha I have to honestly say I love the passion of ZG. Especially Bubbles. You're caring for this community wholeheartedly and the amount of energy you've invested is respectable. Thank you for keeping Hl2dm alive. And thank all of you Zeitgeisters for overshadowing my ex-greatests childhood gaming memories of COD MW2 ffa's. This tops it by a ... bubbles gigantic ... horsecock
I don't usually speak much during games partly because of my keyboard sitting far to my left for more mouse space. It's just a hassle having to adjust the keyboard to type. I notice how I lose focus on the match and become less effective. - Yeah I know; Tryhard! - Ye ye ye no chillhard.
I have a bind for ":D" and "RPG" on keys M and N, and even trying to hit the right key for the right occasion between those two gets me killed more often than tripmines.
I'm working on getting another 2 binds however for "yes" and "no". Since this seems like a fundemental binary language wise to adopt in order to survive in this hot climate.
